Communities need stable and affordable homes for rent and they also need financial skills and resources to make long-term economic progress. IKOYI CDC has made it an organizational commitment to provide support in this field to our non-profit affordable housing developer members and their residents.

FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP

Increasingly, elderly residents of rental properties have experienced financial problems and exploitation, leading to IKOYI CDC to launch its Financial Literacy Workshop.

The course seeks to empower and educate older adults about smart money management skills. Our 90 minute program is designed to provide Seniors with basic money management concepts for a limited budget, benefits of banking, budgeting basics, and an overview of public benefits and how to apply for them.

In partnership with local community agencies who will speak in detail to the diversity of programs and benefits eligible to our seniors, IKOYI CDC offers nonprofit affordable housing developer properties our specialized Financial Literacy workshops.

About this Program?

The IKOYI CDC Internship Program is a one-year paid internship for university students designed to recruit, train, and retain housing development professionals who enhance inclusion and racial equity within the Affordable Housing and Community Development field and assist in meeting the needs of diverse communities in the US

This internship is intended to provide an entry into the affordable housing and community development field to college students from historically underrepresented low-income and marginalized community's representative of the growing diverse populations served by these nonprofit housing developers.

How It Works?

Three main entities make up the program: the intern, IKOYI CDC, and the Host Agency.

IKOYI CDC is a nonprofit organization that serves as the coordinator of the program. We sponsor the program and coordinate trainings and supplemental program activities. The Host Company is the location where each Intern carries out day-to-day work. For example a  Host Company would be a nonprofit affordable housing developer or housing authority. Host Companies  are located throughout Illinois.

Interns are selected via a competitive application process, and are placed with a host company for one year, beginning work in the summer (full-time) and continuing through the spring (part-time).  The intern works closely with a supervisor and follows an Intern Work Plan that provides a well-rounded intern experience in the field of nonprofit affordable housing and community development. IKOYI CDC provides an internship program orientation to both Interns and host companies to ensure an understanding of the program terms, expectations, and to ensure an optimal experience for all parties.

During the year, the intern will be actively involved in affordable housing development. The intern will learn hands-on what it takes to create sustainable affordable housing communities, and specifically learn the intricacies of developing and rehabilitating multifamily housing complexes from concept inception to construction completion for low-income and diverse communities.

Our internship program ensures each Intern gains the skills and professional experience needed to pursue a career in the affordable housing field upon completion from the program.

Internship Term

The term of the program is one year, beginning as early as June 1 and ending May 31 of the following year.

Interns are expected to work full-time during the summer, and transition to part-time work during the academic year.

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking candidates from low and moderate communities interested in pursuing a career in the non-profit affordable housing and community development field. Candidates must be entering their last year of undergraduate studies at a four-year university or be recent undergraduate college graduates.

Some locations require that the Intern have access to a vehicle and a state-issued driver's license, or reliable transportation to carry out the day-to-day duties of the work.  Interns will work in a combination model of remote work from home and in-person office visits each week.

Applications for the 2024/2025 year are now open. For more information or an application, please contact hello@ikoyicdc.org.
